Yunnan (China), three young men employed as housekeepers and launderers sitting with Bert Krawczyk: "These are three houseboys from the airbase at Luliang. Houseboys were provided by the Chinese government under a reverse lend-lease program. The China War Area Service Command administered the program. This command was set up by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek to take care of the food and housing needs of American servicemen in China, who were considered guests by the Chinese government."
S/Sgt Bert A. Krawczyk was an American serviceman who was stationed in China during WWII, variously at Luliang, Songming (ie, Yangkai), and Kunming in Yunnan province, and at Chengdu in Sichuan province. A collection of his WWII photos are online at the AGSL Digital Photo Archive and our project is mirroring a few relevant photos as part of our project.
Bert Krawczyk was in China roughly 1943-1945. Later in life he was also an artist, painting watercolors, and he visited Yunnan again in 1989. He also published a book on his experiences in China, titled China, Then 1943, Now 1994: An American's Unforgettable Impressions of Yunnan Province (1994).
