Ex-CBI Roundup Background Story

Ex-CBI Roundup magazine, a fascinating and valuable historical source, a great continuation of the spirit of the original war-time CBI Roundup, and an precious social space for veterans and families for many years (and before the advent of on-line social spaces like Facebook).

This collection contains images collected by the editors of Ex-CBI Roundup magazine, Dwight King and son Clark King (4th and final editor), since 1982. Ex-CBI Roundup magazine was a publication that had an amazing lifespan and ran for 64 consecutive years after the conclusion of World War II and the closure of the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations.   The magazine was a fascinating and valuable historical source, a great continuation of the spirit of the original war-time CBI Roundup, and a precious social space for veterans and families for many years (and before the advent of on-line social spaces like Facebook). It was wholeheartedly supported by thousands of people (especially CBI veterans and their families) for over six decades, and that support included not only financial support but also the sending in of stories, letters, and photographs detailing the exploits and adventures of servicemen and servicewomen within the CBI Theater.  No other theater of war has ever supported a publication in this fashion, or for nearly as long.  The Roundup delivered its last printed issue to its subscribers in July of 2009.

Ex-CBI Roundup came out in magazine form after the war, but the original CBI-Roundup was a war-time newspaper published and distributed regularly in the CBI.  Issues included news, humor, and of course, stories and pictures of attractive stars or models, such as 'cheesecake' Paulette Goddard, above.

Clark King was gracious to provide our project with several thousand images that the magazine had collected over the years from veterans, some previously published, many not, and allowed us to scan them all over two summers.  All have been uploaded and indexed on this website. Remembering Shared Honor hopes that the many hundreds of hours of effort to scan, clean-up, upload, index, and annotate will be of value far into the future.
